Built in the 20th year during the period of Emperor Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (AD 1894), the Fortress was historically regarded as the "gateway to Fujian Province and key to South China". It is a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level. The Fortress currently has a German Krupp cannon which was manufactured in 1893 with a weight of 87 tons and a range of 19,760 meters. The cannon set the Guinness World Record of "the World's Oldest and Largest Coastal Cannon of the19th Century Preserved at its Original Location".
