In the 1840s, Xiamen became one of the five trading ports and western powers came to Gulangyu to build villas and mansions. After one hunderd years, the tragic history formed the building cluster with Chinese and western buildings in different styles combining Chinese and western elements. Nowadays, if you ramble around Gulangyu, "built during Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty", "built in 1918" and other doorplates will make you clearly feel the turbulent past of this island. You can weave through different countries in short time with buildings of baroque, ancient Rome and Southeast Asia in Gulangyu.

The old villas in Gulangyu combining Chinese and western elements and making foreign things serve China can make people lost in endless memory to recall some smell and moment.
